The Pot Is Boiling

When I talked about tense times, I had a number of people comment that there wasn’t really anything to worry about.  After all, we have all the veterans, the government, and most of the guns. However, my point was that any coming war wouldn’t be like the 1860’s.

Apparently, I didn’t communicate it well.  What I was talking about was stuff like this:

The FBI arrested a TUSD employee on suspicion of threatening U.S. Rep. Martha McSally.

FBI agents arrested Steve Martan, 58, in connection with three messages left on the congressional office voicemail on May 2 and May 10, according to a criminal complaint filed May 12 in U.S. District Court in Tucson. Martan is a campus monitor at Miles Exploratory Learning Center in the Tucson Unified School District. He was placed on home assignment and told not to come into work as the district investigates the allegations.

The voicemails contained threats to McSally, including that she should “be careful” when she returns to Tucson and that her days “were numbered.” He threatened to shoot her in one of the expletive-filled messages.

The complaint stated Martan told agents he was venting frustrations with McSally’s congressional votes in support of the president of the United States.

Of course, my concerns are that they’ll figure out that issuing threats is a good way to be caught before they try and hurt people.  I’m worried they’ll learn from groups like Al Queda.

No, it will not happen overnight (if it happens).  It takes time for things to come to a head.  Keep in mind that the Boston Massacre was in 1770, but it took another five years before Lexington and Concord.  No, I’m not comparing Antifa to the Founding Fathers. My point is that things don’t happen in an instant.

While it’s possible that Martan wasn’t actually going to hurt McSally and was just talking smack, that’s not a risk anyone should be willing to take. No one at all.

Especially after a woman named Wendy L. Wright tried to run Rep. David Kustoff off the road for his vote on the Affordable Care Act. Then, many on her side of the aisle expressed sympathy for someone who initiated violence against a political opponent.

This is twice, and I fear it’s just heating up. This is twice in a matter of weeks…but no, I’m silly for being concerned.

Look, I’m not saying I’m a primary target of anyone.  I don’t know that I’d ever be a target.  I hope and pray that saner heads look at what’s happening and recognize where we’re heading.

However, let’s be honest for a moment. Do you really think the zealots on either side want to de-escalate things?

“Oh, but there’s only a few of them.”  So what? How many does it take to kill? Christopher Dorner killed five people and wounded three others all by himself.  Further, Dorner created such fear and confusion that three others were shot by police.

Imagine the problems a handful of Dorner’s could create, especially if they had a support network of sympathizers like those who expressed their sympathy for Wright? They might not pull a trigger, but they can provide safe houses, food, clothing, disguises, fake IDs, and any number of other support activities.

Yeah, there may only be a handful of them, but they can create real problems.  Especially if you’re one of their targets.

Again, I’m not saying any of this will happen.  I’m saying I’m concerned that it may happen. I want to be wrong.  I want to look back in later years, write my memoirs of this time, and chuckle about all this. In fact, there’s an excellent chance of just that. Already, some of the potential recruits for such a movement are backing away from that line of thinking.  That’s a good sign.

However, it’s going to take a long while before I pretend we’re out of the woods. My advice to you? Do the same.
